Tyre sizes explained, with UK prices for every common size

A tyre size such as 205/55 R16 gives the tyre's width in millimetres (205), its sidewall height as a percentage of that width (55%) and the wheel rim it fits in inches (16). Price rises with rim size: across 15,379 car-tyre offers observed at Camskill and Tyreleader on 23 September 2026, the median mid-range summer tyre cost £52.40 on 14in rims and £126.14 on 19in rims, the largest rim priced at both retailers.

How to read a tyre size

The size is moulded on the sidewall, for example 205/55 R16 91V:

  • 205 — section width in millimetres.
  • 55 — aspect ratio: the sidewall is 55% of the width, here 112.8 mm. A lower number means a thinner sidewall.
  • R — radial construction (almost every car tyre).
  • 16 — the wheel rim diameter in inches. Together these give an overall diameter of 631.9 mm, about 811 revolutions per mile.
  • 91V — the load index (91 = 615 kg per tyre) and speed rating (V = 240 km/h). Replacements should match or exceed both.
  • XL (extra load, a reinforced tyre) and run-flat markings (RFT, ROF, SSR, ZP) change the price; each size page measures that difference where there are enough like-for-like pairs.

Your car's approved sizes are in the handbook and on the placard inside the driver's door or fuel flap. Front and rear sizes can differ on performance and rear-wheel-drive cars.

Tyre prices by rim size

Median price per tyre, summer tyres that are not run-flat, including VAT and delivery but not fitting. From 14in to 19in the mid-range median rises by about 19% per inch of rim.

Rows above 19in come from one retailer only (Camskill); sizes on those rims do not have a price page yet, because a size page needs offers from both retailers.
