Why company cars are left out
Company cars are registered at the keeper's address. For leasing and fleet companies that is a head office, so a few areas record far more company electric cars than anyone there drives: in 16 areas company-kept battery electric cars outnumber private ones more than two to one, led by Windsor and Maidenhead with 196,604. The shares here are for privately kept cars, which follow where their owners live.

Limitations
Areas are lower-tier local authorities across the UK with at least 10,000 privately kept cars and 100 plug-in cars; Isles of Scilly and City of London fall below that and are not ranked. Counts are cars licensed at the end of the quarter by the keeper's registered address; shares and ranks are 73 Auto calculations from the official counts.

Where these figures come from
- Vehicle licensing statistics tables VEH0142 (plug-in cars) and VEH0105 (all cars) by local authority — Department for Transport and DVLA. Open Government Licence v3.0.
- Shares, ranks, changes and regional comparisons (73 Auto analysis of the DfT tables) — 73 Auto. Derived figures.
Figures labelled as 73 Auto estimates are our own analysis of these sources, set out in the methodology and data sources. To report a factual error, see corrections.
