What counts as vehicle crime here
The Home Office's “vehicle offences” group of police recorded crime: aggravated vehicle taking (code 37.2), theft from a vehicle (code 45), theft or unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle (code 48), interfering with a motor vehicle (code 126). Figures are published by Community Safety Partnership and averaged over the two financial years 2024/25 and 2025/26. Offences a force could not assign to a partnership are shared across that force's areas in proportion to their cars.
The denominator is privately kept licensed cars at 2026 Q2 (DfT VEH0125), placed in each authority through the ONS postcode lookup. Company and fleet cars are not in it.
How area enters the 73 Auto insurance estimate
73 Auto analysis, not official data. The insurance estimate turns each area's rate into an index (area rate ÷ England and Wales rate), averaged over the local authorities in your postcode district. It clips the index to 0.5–2, applies it to the collision part of the premium raised to the power 0.94 and to the theft part at power 1, and compares it with the UK-average area, an index of 0.92 (the typical car sits below the national rate because crime is concentrated). Each area page shows the result for the reference driver. It is a model estimate, never a quote.
Limitations
These are crimes recorded by the police, not all crimes: many vehicle thefts from cars go unreported, and recording practice differs between forces.
The rate is per car registered to a keeper in the area, not per car parked there. City centres attract commuters' and visitors' cars, so their rates are high relative to the cars kept there.
Scotland and Northern Ireland are not covered: their recorded crime is not published in a comparable form.
2 authorities with fewer than 10,000 privately kept cars are not listed, because a handful of offences would swing their rate.

Enter a UK registration, then add your postcode: the estimate uses your postcode district's vehicle-crime index. Your first check is free and shows the vehicle summary and its headline ownership cost. The category-by-category breakdown is part of a paid check.
