Road tax 2026/27

BMW 5 Series road tax in 2026/27

Road tax (VED) on a BMW 5 Series in 2026/27 depends on when it was first registered. One first registered between 1 March 2001 and 31 March 2017 pays by CO2 band: across the 777 versions in the Vehicle Certification Agency's CO2 database from 2001 to 2016, that is £20 (band B) to £790 (band M) for 12 months, most often £275 (band G). One first registered from 1 April 2017 pays the £200 standard rate each year after its first (plus £440 a year in years 2 to 6 if its list price was over £40,000, or £50,000 for an electric car registered from 1 April 2025). Bought new in 2026/27, the first-year rate across the 22 versions in the VCA database on 28 September 2026 is £115 to £560, set by WLTP CO2. Cars first registered before March 2001 pay by engine size: £230 up to 1,549cc, £375 above.

Which BMW 5 Series is cheapest to tax

14% of the BMW 5 Series versions sold between 2001 and 2016 pay less than the £200 a newer car pays, because their CO2 figure puts them in a band below it. The cheapest listed was the 5 Series F10/F11 520d Saloon - 225/55 R17 tyres front & rear (1995cc diesel, A8) at 109g/km (£20); the dearest the 5 Series E60/E61 M5 Touring - up to February 2008 (4999cc petrol, SMG 7) at 361g/km (£790).

Of the 199,288 BMW 5 Seriess licensed in the UK at 31 December 2025 (DfT), 60% were first used between 2002 and 2016 and so pay by CO2 band, 29% from 2018 onwards and pay the flat rate, and 3% before 2001, taxed by engine size; the remaining 8% were first used in 2001 or 2017, when the rules changed part-way through the year.

BMW 5 Series registered from April 2017

A new BMW 5 Series pays a one-off first-year rate set by its WLTP CO2 figure, then £200 a year. Of the 22 versions in the VCA database on 28 September 2026, the cheapest first year is the 5 Series Touring 530e M Sport (1998cc electricity / petrol, A8) at 16g/km (£115) and the dearest the 5 Series Touring 520i M Sport Touring (1998cc petrol electric, A8) at 150g/km (£560). The first-year rate is normally included in a new car's on-the-road price; a used buyer pays from the standard rate.

Expensive Car Supplement: of the 30 BMW 5 Series versions sold since September 2025 that could still be paying it in 2026/27, 73 Auto's list-price reference confirms 30 cost over the threshold and pay £440 a year on top, and 0 cost less; the list price of the other 0 is not known to us, so we do not say either way.

Limitations

Rates are the 2026/27 rates for a 12-month licence taken out from 2026-04-01; paying monthly or for six months costs slightly more. The CO2 figure is the official type-approval figure the VCA published when each version was on sale, which is normally the figure on the V5C, but a car's own V5C is what DVLA uses. Some versions were sold under a different model name (for example estate or MPV variants), and the VCA's list does not say how many of each were sold, so the version counts are not a guide to how common each band is on the road. The Expensive Car Supplement depends on the original list price including options, which the VCA list does not carry. Figures are calculated with 73 Auto's VED engine from the DVLA rate tables.
